This weekend we celebrate our mothers. My mom was a singer, a storyteller and a great cook. She passed away several years ago but the memories of her laughter, her faith, and her passion for living remain. Good food was a centerpiece in everything we did together as a family. When we all traveled it might have been to see mountains or a stretch of coastline, but that was just a cover. The real purpose of every trip was an unspoken quest for the perfect slice of coconut cream pie. But no matter how many good things she made or found to eat on her many travels, if anyone asked her for the best thing she ever ate in her life, I know exactly what she would say. It wasn't exotic or found in some faraway place. It was something simple served to her in her own backyard when she was just a little girl. But it had a secret ingredient.
